Dear TLS Community,
The Remote Control
A remote control is an essential part of any TV, DVD and many other electrical devices these days. Without it many of us would be lost and in search of it to fill our lives with news, sport, entertainment and a way of relaxation.
What use would God have for a remote control? How would He use it? What buttons would He push?
The Power Button
Would God turn us off whenever He had seen enough or was annoyed with what we were
presenting to Him?
1 Kings 8:57 tells us that “…the Lord our God be with us, just as He was with our people who lived long ago….He never leaves us.…He never deserts us.”
God loves us so much that He is always there and never turns away. He never touches the power button to us.
The Pause Button
Does God press the pause button? Does He want us to rest and be refreshed? He presses it many times, but do we feel it?
Mark 6:31 says “…come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”
God made the world in six days and on the seventh He rested. God wants us to take time out and rest and pause for a moment and refresh.
The Home Button
Is God’s finger continually reaching out and calling you home? Where is home?
“…the one who comes to me I will never send away.” John 6:37
God wants us to be with Him. To know that we always have a home with Him and that He will
always accept us with no strings or conditions.
Cancel, Exit, Selector and Stop Buttons
Whilst we might consider pushing one of the above buttons from time to time on our remotes, would God ever consider pushing them? Jesus told us “I give you a new command. Love one another. You must love one another, just as I have loved you.” John 13:34
God would never push one of these buttons as He loves us all. He does not select us. He does not give up on us and stop us having free will. He never exits from our lives and He never cancels our lives.
There are many more buttons on the remote control. How many buttons are you pushing? The next time you pick up your remote control stop and think about God and the many ways He might be talking to you through this simple everyday item. What is He asking of you?
I am going to set a challenge for my class to see how many different ways they think a remote control is linked to God and what buttons He would and wouldn’t push. I open this challenge to the whole school community to see how many different ways God might use the buttons on the remote control. Please email your responses through to me and I will share them with the children in my class.
